MSc. Nicos Stylianou
ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS
Nicos Stylianou studied Civil Engineering in London and obtained his Diploma in Civil Engineering in 1967. He obtained his Masters Degree in Foundation Engineering from the University of Birmingham, U.K., in 1969. He became Chartered Civil Engineer (MICE) in 1973, and in 2003 he became Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers (FICE).
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
He has more than 40 years experience in Civil Engineering mainly in the fields of Geotechnical Engineering, Dam Engineering and Water Engineering. He worked for 34 years in the Water Development Department (WDD) of the Republic of Cyprus, from where he retired in December of 2003. In WDD he held the positions of Executive Engineer, Senior Water Engineer and Chief Water Engineer (Deputy Director). His work had to do with the planning, design, project management, operation and maintenance of water works and management of the water resources of Cyprus. He was involved with the planning and design of dams, water treatment works, pumping stations and water conveyance pipelines, irrigation networks etc. in connection with the development and management of the water resources of Cyprus.
Since 2003, he is a Civil Engineering Consultant offering advice and services in geotechnical work, structural design for buildings and civil engineering structures, feasibility studies and designs of dams, pipelines and other water works.
NATIONAL & INTERNATIONAL ACTIVITIES
He has been the Country Representative of the Institution of Civil Engineers (UK) since 2001, and a member of the European Subcommittee of ICE. Past Chairman of the Cyprus Group of Civil and Mechanical Professional Engineers of ICE and IMechE, and member of its Committee for the past 20 years. He has been a member of the Central Administration Committee of the Cyprus Association of Civil Engineers for 12 years and the National Delegate to the European Council of Civil Engineers (ECCE) for the past 14 years and attended nearly all of the General Assembly Meetings. For 30 years he was the Secretary of the Cyprus National Committee on Large Dams, which is a member of the International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD), and represented Cyprus on most of the ICOLD Annual Executive Meetings and Congresses. He was elected as an Executive Board Member of the European Council of Civil Engineers (ECCE) in November 2010.
